Cas Abou - a roi to the East of the plantation house
- Details
Cas Abou is a plantation that we have visited many times, but there are still areas where we didn't go. One of these areas is a large roi to the East of the plantation house. According to the Werbata map from 1909 there are four dams built in this roi to create an area where the water was kept for a longer period after the rain. In this way agriculture was possible there. Always an interesting area to visit. According to the map the dams would have been constructed as earthen dams.
We, François, Fred, Carel, Eddy, Hetty, Chris and I met at 8 AM at the parking lot of the plantation house Cas Abou. Carel had invited two guests for this hike, Winnie and Frits.

Patrick revisited
- Details
In 2011 we already visited the plantation Patrick. At that time I didn't write reports in English so there is no English version available from that visit. The Dutch version can be found here. At that time we did part of the trip by car. This time we went hiking from the Road to Westpunt. We followed the dirt road to the ruin of the plantation house Patrick. First we saw the large water tank. From there we entered the vegetation to look for the ruin of the plantation house. That is located close to the dirt road. Not much has changed in the past 4 years. The condition looks the same. One thing that I didn't find this time is the generator that was here in the corral in 2011. Apparently it was removed just as the complete stone crusher has been removed from the coastal region of Patrick.
We detected one very strange object. Someone has placed a two memorial crosses inside the ruin. We have no idea if someone died here or what other reason there could be for placing such memorial crosses.
Ascencion - walking through one of the roi's
- Details
After a long while - I was unable to attend the weekly hikes for several weeks - I joined the archaeology sleuths for the last hike of the year. Our target was a roi that we did not yet follow during one of our previous visits in this area. We met at 8 AM; we had one guest, David Koren, a social geographer who is in Curaçao for a short visit. The others were François, Fred, Michèle, Eddy, Carel and I.
The first part of our hike was on asphalt road to the point where the roi crosses the street. There we entered the vegetation.
Cave with indian drawings at Ronde Klip
- Details
On Thursday, October 29, 2015 the sleuths went looking for a cave with indian drawings in the area of Ronde Klip in the cliff between the middle and lower limestone terrace on the North shore. The cave is described in the book "The prehistoric rock drawings of Bonaire and Curaçao" from P. Wagenaar Hummelinck. The description contains also a small drawing where the cave is located. Fred created based on this map and Google Earth a waypoint of the most probable location of the cave. I checked his location with the Werbata map and came up with a slightly different location.
The Seru Bientu in the Christoffel park
- Details
On Thursday October 22, 2015, a small group of the sleuths, Eddy, Carel, Fred, Michèle and I went for a leisurely hike in the nicest part of the Christoffel park, the Seru Bientu, at least that is my opinion. So we met at the entrance of the Christoffel park at 7:45 AM and went from there with Fred's car to the small parking lot where a path to the Seru Bientu starts. Following that path we reached the top of this 225 meters high mountain easily. The top of the Seru Bientu contains a large number of very old Sabal palms, a palm, native to Curaçao, that is only found in the Christoffel park. There we split, because 'leisurely' is not really a word in the vocabulary of some of the sleuths. Michèle and Carel went on leisurely taking nature pictures while Fred, Eddy and I went for a more challenging hike.
