Roi from Seru Pretu to Boka Tabla
- Details
On Thursday February 12, 2015 we went back for another hike in the Christoffelpark. Our agenda is to investigate (almost) every hilltop and valley (roi) in the Christoffel park. A large part of this park is not visited by the public and even the park rangers don't come (often) in certain areas of the park. So every new trip can result in the discovery of unknown facts of the park. And even if we don't find anything during our hike, then at least we made clear that there is nothing of historical value and no extraordinary natural phenomena in that particular area of the park. With that as our agenda, there is still a lot of work to do in the park.
This time we investigated a roi that is running from the side of the Seru Pretu, which we climbed last week, in the direction of Boka Tabla. Our starting point was the parking lot at the Boka Tabla Viewpoint. There we parked our cars. From there we walked via the asphalt road to the point closest to the roi. Walking on asphalt is not really what we like, so we were glad that we could enter the vegetation at a certain point.
Seru Pretu
- Details
In the area of Zorgvlied in the Christoffel park lies a mountain that we didn't climb yet. Thursday February 5, 2015 was the date that we decided to do just that. We met at the parking lot of the Christoffel park. We means François, Fred, Carel, Eddy, Hetty and me. We went into the park with two cars and parked these cars at the Knip Viewpoint. From there we started our hike. First we followed the asphaltroad downhill. Soon we crossed the border between the former plantations Zorgvlied and Knip; this border is marked by a dry-stone wall that is visible on both sides of the asphalt road. We continued on the road till this road made a turn. There we went straight through into the vegetation.
Seru Warawara
- Details
During our previous visit to Hofi Mango we started the trail to the top of the Seru Warawara but decided after a short while to save this trip for another time. That time came on Thursday January 29, 2015. Once again we had permission from Alex and Lia Ooms to park our cars inside the hofi. The group was small this time, Eddy, Carel, François and I and one guest, Chris Winkel.
Alex showed us the way to the first top of the Seru Warawara; for us 'a walk in the park' because there was a path to this top. So we didn't have to crawl under or cut our way through the vegetation.
Soon we crossed a first dry-stone wall; The Werbata map showed a green line at this location which most of the time indicates a fence or other boundary between areas, but sometimes also a dry-stone wall.
Seru di kueba
- Details
On Thursday January 15, 2015, the archaeology sleuths went way back in time. The target was Seru di kueba in the former plantation of Sint Hyronimus, although the area is commonly known as Wacao. This mountain is known for its fossils. The rock is formed underwater in the Eocene period and contains a lot of fossils. These fossils are at least 33.9 million years old (end of eocene periode) but can be as old as 56 million years (start of eoceen period). The mountain contains a lot of shallow caves, the sides of which look like compressed sandstone.
We had permission from the owners of the plantation and there were no shooting exercises in the area. We entered the plantation through the gate, changed into the 4x4 cars of some of the sleuths and drove in the direction of the mountain. Luckily the dirtroad was in good condition and we could easily reach the top of the Seru di Kueba. There we parked our cars and started our hike.
Roi Salga
- Details
On Thursday January 8, 2015 we went to explore Roi Salga; one part of this roi runs parallel to the gate of the Christoffel park and at one point crosses this gate. So this was a perfect occasion to check the condition of the gate in this area. For that reason we got assistance from the Christoffel park. We parked our cars at the entrance of the Christoffelpark and one of the rangers, Wotty, dropped us close to the most Northern part of the gate outside the park and promised to pick us up at the end of the hike.
We had two guests during this hike; the first a friend of Carel, Tommy Wieringa, writer of a number of novels; the second Gabriel Wernet (Pipel) who accompanied us on another trip. We left without Pipel because it was not sure if he would come. After we were dropped off by Wotty we received a phone call from Pipel that he would come directly to the drop-off point. So we waited for him.
