Seru Kuater Anker and Seru Para Mira

Lelienberg 20140417 006 small

Opposite the entrance of Wacao is the area of the former plantation Leliënberg. Two interesting hills in that area were our target this time because there are some concentrations of candle cacti on these hills. That could mean that there were houses on that hills in the past. The Werbata maps don't have any indications of houses though.
We had permission to enter the area of Wacao to park our cars and from there we walked over the asphalt road in the direction of the first hill, the Seru Kuater Anker.

Porto Marie 20140410 025 small

On Thursday April 10 the sleuths went to Porto Marie to explore the area South of the plantation house. On the Werbata topographical map from 1906 a lot of waterworks are visible; wells and a number of dams. More than enough reason for a visit.
This hike would be a relatively short one because we would conclude it around noon with a birthday lunch for Hetty, one of the participants of this group.
At 8 AM we all gathered at the gate of Porto Marie. Normally the plantation is open from 9:30AM but in this case someone came with the key to let us in.
We parked our cars along the road and entered the vegetation. François and Fred had promised us a lot of Wabis and cacti for this hike and they appeared to be right.

Ruin of plantation house Ravenslot

Klein Piscadera Ravenslot 20140403 023 smallThe archaeology sleuths revisited the ruins of the former plantation house Ravenslot on Thursday April 3, 2014. These ruins lie at the foot of the Jack Evertsz mountain.
This time we went to show the ruins to Anita de Moulin. She is making an inventory of the plantation houses in Curaçao and Ravenslot was still missing. Apart from Anita we had three other guests, Joëlle de Jong-Mercelina. Zefania Stokkermans and Karel Aster. Also Allan van der Ree was once again present. Often he is not able to attend because of his busy schedule around the setup of the war museum at Blauw. And it was thanks to Allan that we got permission from the owner of Klein Piscadera, mister Ataf, to enter his terrain with the cars. In this way we could start our walk close to the location of the ruins.

Stolen cannon placed back on the fort

Beekenburg terugplaatsing kanon 20140404 007 smallA few years ago an attempt was made to steal one of the cannons from the bastion next to the tower of fort Beekenburg. The thiefs succeeded in dropping the cannon from that bastion and dragged it to the path. Apparently the cannon was too heavy to go any farther. Now the cannon has been placed back on the fort by means of an army helicopter.

Rif St. Marie - Seru Largu part 2

Details
22 March 2014

Seru Largu Rif 20140320 020 smallLast week we were unable to walk along the whole South-Western cliff of the Seru Largu in the area of the former plantation Rif St. Marie, currently part of the Coral Estate resort. So on Thursday March 20, 2014 a small group of the Archaeology Sleuths went back for a second visit. Karel Aster was our guest for this hike. A bit confusing with two people in the group with a similar sounding name and we came up with several alternative names to keep them apart but none really sticked.

Once again we parked most of our cars in the parking lot at the gate of the Coral Estate resort and from there we went with two cars to the parking lot close to the Seru Largu.
