Savonet - walking through the roi

Details
22 June 2014

Savonet Roi Beru 20140619 062 smallWith so many mountains in the Christoffelpark, the most impressive being the Christoffelberg with a heigth of 372 meters according to Werbata, there must also be a large system of channels to get rid of the water flowing from these mountains in the rain period. Such a channel is called a 'roi' in Papiamentu. This time we decided to walk through a number of such rois from the border of the former plantation Knip and Savonet to the plantation house Savonet. We could do this thanks to the help of one of the park rangers who was willing to drop us off halfway between the Seru Mangel and the Seru Bosman at a small parking place.

From Seru Gracia to Seru Bosman

Details
07 June 2014

Seru Gracia naar Seru Bosman 20140605 014 smallOn Thursday, June 5, 2014 we wanted to hike from the Seru Gracia to the Seru Bosman via the Seru Batata and a nameless mountain. The distance was only 1.7 kilometers but we expected that we would be unable to come back at the Seru Gracia in time. Luckily we got help from the park rangers. We went with two of our cars and a truck of the rangers to the Seru Bosman where we parked our cars. From there the park ranger brought us with his truck to our starting point, the Seru Gracia. In this way we would have to walk the trip only in one direction. And that appeared to be a good decision because it took us a full 4 hours to reach our cars. A clear indication of the difficulty of this hike.

Pos Monton and surroundings

Details

Pos Monton 20140529 039 smallLast week I was unable to attend the weekly hike of the archaeology sleuths because of unforeseen circumstances. That was a pity because they found  formerly unknown indigo tanks in the area of Savonet close to Pos Monton. To allow a larger group to see this find a second visit to the same area was brought on Thursday May 29. This time I was able to be present. Also a visit was brought to the indian site in the area of St. Hyronimus.

We gathered in the parking lot of the Christoffel park at 8 AM. From there we went with four cars into the park. We parked our cars close to Pos Monton. From there we went by foot. In the past week it had rained a bit on the island and immediately the park looked greener. There were several teints of green and yellow visible from where we parked our cars. A beautiful sight.

Santa Krus - opposite Hofi Mango

Details
10 May 2014

St Krus 20140508 042 smallTo the North of Hofi Mango lies a large system of 'rooien' (riverbeds) that transport the rainwater from the mountains in that area through Hofi Mango to the bay of Santa Krus. The result is an area that for a large part of the year can be green. On the topographical map made by Kadaster in 1993 this area is for that reason indicated as green. But this year we have a long and very dry period since the end of March and most plants have gone into a state that allows them to survive this drought. So most of the trees dropped their leaves except for the Manzaliña trees that are many in this area and the Century plant that is in bloom in this period (see picture).

Phosphate mines at Ascencion

Details
28 April 2014

Ascencion 20140424 035 smallIt is a long time ago that François, Fred and I visited the phosphate mines at Ascencion (June 2010) and because the others hadn't seen these mines, we decided to renew our visit on Thursday April 24, 2014. François is doing archaeological work in St. Kitts and Dominica, so he was not present this time. Dirk with a family member, also with the name Dirk, Fred, Carel, Eddy, Hetty and I parked our cars just behind the gate of the plantation house. Dirk has the key of this gate and in this way we are sure our cars are parked safely. From there we took one of the many Uniek Curaçao trails in this area in the direction of the Seroe Mainshie (Werbata) or Ser'i Mainshi (Kadaster). On top of that seru the mines are located and also a triangulation point.
