Roi Salga

Details
12 January 2015

Roi Salga 20150108 018 smallOn Thursday January 8, 2015 we went to explore Roi Salga; one part of this roi runs parallel to the gate of the Christoffel park and at one point crosses this gate. So this was a perfect occasion to check the condition of the gate in this area. For that reason we got assistance from the Christoffel park. We parked our cars at the entrance of the Christoffelpark and one of the rangers, Wotty,  dropped us close to the most Northern part of the gate outside the park and promised to pick us up at the end of the hike.
We had two guests during this hike; the first a friend of Carel, Tommy Wieringa, writer of a number of novels; the second Gabriel Wernet (Pipel) who accompanied us on another trip. We left without Pipel because it was not sure if he would come. After we were dropped off by Wotty we received a phone call from Pipel that he would come directly to the drop-off point. So we waited for him.

Hofi Mango 20141211 012 smallOn Thursday December 11, 2014 we visited Hofi Mango for a second time. The first time in April 2011 was made possible by Dirk who got permission from the people that live here; this time we visited for two reasons; we hoped to find the indigo tanks of Santa Cruz and we celebrated the last hike of Dirk. He is moving back to The Netherlands by the end of this month.

At 8 AM the gate was opened for us and we parked our cars next to the sugar mill. Some of us got a short tour through the restored sugar mill. After a short while we started our search for the indigo tanks. They are supposed to be downwind from the plantation house and in the neighborhood of water. So we went in Westerly direction where a number of roi's can be found on the Werbata map.

Knip - waterworks and indigo tank

Details
06 December 2014

Knip 20141204 011 smallIn july 2010 the members of the then much smaller Working group Archaeology found a construction that we identified as an indigo tank. We based our search then on instructions from André Rancuret. It was one of the first indigo tanks that we had seen. In the meantime we have found a large number of indigo tanks. That also means that our knowledge about indigo tanks has increased since then. So on December 4, 2014 we decided to revisit this indigo tank to be sure that it indeed is what we thought it was.

Pos Kayuda 20141127 012 smallIn the past we already visited Pos Kayuda coming from the Seru Gracia in the Christoffel park; that was a very long hike. From a previous excursion by the 'Vrienden van het Nationaal Archief' we knew that there is also a trail from country house Knip to Pos Kayuda. That is what we wanted to try out.
A small group of the sleuths parked their cars at the plantation house at 8 AM on Thursday November 27. From there we followed the asphalt road looking for the entry point of the trail to Pos Kayuda.

We found the entry point and entered the vegetation there. The first few meters were a bit difficult. Apparently a tree fell down and partly blocked the trail. We had to crawl under it to reach the nicely maintained trail. There were a lot of plastic strips tied to the trees to indicate where to walk.

Knip - Juliana

Details
24 November 2014

Knip 20141120 025 smallI never knew there was a region in Curaçao with the name Juliana; probably you are as surprised as I were. Fred found this area when he was looking for a target for our next hike. There is a tanki indicated on the Werbata map in the area Juliana, South of the bay of Kleine Knip. So we decided to go looking for this tanki. We, a small group of the archaeology leuths, Karel Aster, Eddy, Fred and I parked our cars at the plantation house of Knip and went from there over the asfaltroad in the direction of the bay of Kleine Knip.
