Ruin of plantation house Ravenslot
- Details
The archaeology sleuths revisited the ruins of the former plantation house Ravenslot on Thursday April 3, 2014. These ruins lie at the foot of the Jack Evertsz mountain.
This time we went to show the ruins to Anita de Moulin. She is making an inventory of the plantation houses in Curaçao and Ravenslot was still missing. Apart from Anita we had three other guests, Joëlle de Jong-Mercelina. Zefania Stokkermans and Karel Aster. Also Allan van der Ree was once again present. Often he is not able to attend because of his busy schedule around the setup of the war museum at Blauw. And it was thanks to Allan that we got permission from the owner of Klein Piscadera, mister Ataf, to enter his terrain with the cars. In this way we could start our walk close to the location of the ruins.
Stolen cannon placed back on the fort
- Details
A few years ago an attempt was made to steal one of the cannons from the bastion next to the tower of fort Beekenburg. The thiefs succeeded in dropping the cannon from that bastion and dragged it to the path. Apparently the cannon was too heavy to go any farther. Now the cannon has been placed back on the fort by means of an army helicopter.
Rif St. Marie - Seru Largu part 2
- Details
Last week we were unable to walk along the whole South-Western cliff of the Seru Largu in the area of the former plantation Rif St. Marie, currently part of the Coral Estate resort. So on Thursday March 20, 2014 a small group of the Archaeology Sleuths went back for a second visit. Karel Aster was our guest for this hike. A bit confusing with two people in the group with a similar sounding name and we came up with several alternative names to keep them apart but none really sticked.
Once again we parked most of our cars in the parking lot at the gate of the Coral Estate resort and from there we went with two cars to the parking lot close to the Seru Largu.
Rif St. Marie - Seru Largu
- Details
In the South-Eastern corner of the former plantation Rif St. Marie is the Seru Largu located with three steep cliffs. The North-Eastern one is facing the saliña, the Eastern cliff is overlooking the sea and the South-Western cliff is overlooking the land. It is this last cliff that we went to explore. After entering the Coral Estate resort we drove to the small parking lot at the foot of the Seru Lucia. From there we first walked a path that is used by the people living here to walk their dogs and then we entered the field with Indigo plants. Hardly recognisable because everything is very dry now the rain season is coming to an end.
Seru Palibandera
- Details
Seru Palibandera means mountain of the flag pole. Was there a flag pole on top of this mountain and got this mountain its name in this way? Interesting enough to go checking. So the Archaeology Sleuths went investigating. On Thursday March 6 we met at the entrance of the Christoffelpark. From there we drove to a parking lot close to this mountain where we parked our car. Before we started our hike to the top we went for a look at the large field of rocks closeby. Apparently the slaves were convinced that if they brought a lot of rocks here and that if they didn't eat salt they would be transported back to Africa. If there is any truth in this story, I don't know, probably not. But true or not at least we had a special experience here.
