Pos Monton and surroundings
- Details
Last week I was unable to attend the weekly hike of the archaeology sleuths because of unforeseen circumstances. That was a pity because they found formerly unknown indigo tanks in the area of Savonet close to Pos Monton. To allow a larger group to see this find a second visit to the same area was brought on Thursday May 29. This time I was able to be present. Also a visit was brought to the indian site in the area of St. Hyronimus.
We gathered in the parking lot of the Christoffel park at 8 AM. From there we went with four cars into the park. We parked our cars close to Pos Monton. From there we went by foot. In the past week it had rained a bit on the island and immediately the park looked greener. There were several teints of green and yellow visible from where we parked our cars. A beautiful sight.
Santa Krus - opposite Hofi Mango
- Details
To the North of Hofi Mango lies a large system of 'rooien' (riverbeds) that transport the rainwater from the mountains in that area through Hofi Mango to the bay of Santa Krus. The result is an area that for a large part of the year can be green. On the topographical map made by Kadaster in 1993 this area is for that reason indicated as green. But this year we have a long and very dry period since the end of March and most plants have gone into a state that allows them to survive this drought. So most of the trees dropped their leaves except for the Manzaliña trees that are many in this area and the Century plant that is in bloom in this period (see picture).
Phosphate mines at Ascencion
- Details
It is a long time ago that François, Fred and I visited the phosphate mines at Ascencion (June 2010) and because the others hadn't seen these mines, we decided to renew our visit on Thursday April 24, 2014. François is doing archaeological work in St. Kitts and Dominica, so he was not present this time. Dirk with a family member, also with the name Dirk, Fred, Carel, Eddy, Hetty and I parked our cars just behind the gate of the plantation house. Dirk has the key of this gate and in this way we are sure our cars are parked safely. From there we took one of the many Uniek Curaçao trails in this area in the direction of the Seroe Mainshie (Werbata) or Ser'i Mainshi (Kadaster). On top of that seru the mines are located and also a triangulation point.
Seru Kuater Anker and Seru Para Mira
- Details
Opposite the entrance of Wacao is the area of the former plantation Leliënberg. Two interesting hills in that area were our target this time because there are some concentrations of candle cacti on these hills. That could mean that there were houses on that hills in the past. The Werbata maps don't have any indications of houses though.
We had permission to enter the area of Wacao to park our cars and from there we walked over the asphalt road in the direction of the first hill, the Seru Kuater Anker.
Porto Marie - South of the plantation house
- Details
On Thursday April 10 the sleuths went to Porto Marie to explore the area South of the plantation house. On the Werbata topographical map from 1906 a lot of waterworks are visible; wells and a number of dams. More than enough reason for a visit.
This hike would be a relatively short one because we would conclude it around noon with a birthday lunch for Hetty, one of the participants of this group.
At 8 AM we all gathered at the gate of Porto Marie. Normally the plantation is open from 9:30AM but in this case someone came with the key to let us in.
We parked our cars along the road and entered the vegetation. François and Fred had promised us a lot of Wabis and cacti for this hike and they appeared to be right.
