Seru di Palomba

Details
30 November 2013

On Thursday November 28, 2013 we went for the third time this month to the Ser'i Bientu. This is an area of the Christoffelpark that is no longer accessible to the public. It is in the former plantation of Zevenbergen (Seven mountains) and as the name says this is an area with many hills and valleys. A beautiful sight if you are on top of one of the many mountains.
The first time we went to the top of the Ser'i Bientu and from there we had seen some trees in the valley that could be of a rare species. That was the main reason that we came back for a second visit. We found some large red Gum trees, not rare but very impressive. When we studied our track afterwards we found out that we had entered the wrong valley. We had been in the valley on the Eastern side of the Ser'i Palomba.  So we came back for a third visit. This time we went higher up the slope of the Ser'i Bientu and entered the valley on the Western side of the Ser'i Palomba.

Manganese mines in the Christoffel park

On thursday October 31, 2013 we went to the Christoffel park to visit the manganese mines. This was a special hike because about 5 years ago Fred, his sister Rita, and François went also to these mines with a delegation of the Christoffel park. This became the start of weekly hikes by François and Fred to search for often forgotten remains of the history of Curaçao. I joined these 2 pioneers after my retirement in may 2010 and in the meantime this is grown into a group of enthousiastic "archaeology sleuths".

On Thursday October 17, 2013, the sleuths went to the Asphalt lake. On invitation of Karel Aster, the director of the Asphalt Lake Recovery company, we got access to the normally closed terrain and we got an explanation of the origin and exploitation of the asphalt lake from Karel personally. Afterwards he brought us to the adjoining freshwater lake in Emmastad where we were free to explore the terrain.

Seru Nobo at the plantation Cas Abou

Details
05 October 2013

On Thursday the archaeology sleuths went for a search of traces of indian habitation on the Seru Nobo at the plantation of Cas Abou. Just under the top of the Seru Nobo we had seen a very interesting niche during a previous visit to the neighboring plantation Porto Marie. From the manager of Porto Marie we had permission to enter the plantation earlier than normal opening times and also from the owner of the plantation Cas Abou we got  permission to enter their property.

07 September 2013

On Thursday, September 5, 2013 the almost complete group of archaeology sleuths met at the small marina at the bay of Piscadera. There we parked our cars and walked a small distance before we entered the vegetation. We had several targets for this day: we wanted to check the country house, we wanted to search for remnants of slave habitation near the country house and we hoped to find another set of indigo tanks in this area. We succeeded in some of this areas but for some of us this day turned out to be a very intense one.
